I support human rights.
Let's start with the basics: LGBTQ people are people- people being the operative word. People= human- so they by virtue of being human deserve the same rights and protections as any other individuals.
I live in a very conservative town. The majority of people in this town are people who are dedicated to Christianity. To be emphatically clear, I take no issue with that, as long as their faith is their faith and it doesn't become something they require others to abide by. Many Christians assert that the bible says that marriage is defined as a promise between one woman and one man (we can debate what the bible says about marriage in another post). This is what leads us to one problem:
A significant percentage of people in the country, do not believe in the bible as a source of faith or a guide for moral living, as a significant portion of people do not garner their ethics or morals from the bible asking them to follow its teachings regarding marriage makes no sense.
One of the best things about the US is that the US is not a Christian nation, we are not a Jewish nation, or a Islamic Nation. Our country was founded on the ideals of separation of church and state, where citizens are guaranteed the freedom of and from religion, therefore for laws to be written and instituted based on a religious text is in direct contradiction to our nations founding principles.
Whether or not two adults are permitted to marry in no way lessens the value and the importance of any other marriage.
Back to point-
LGBTQ people do not need special privileges or rights; they need and deserve the same rights granted to any other citizen.
Let us not forget that not terribly long ago, it was illegal for people of different races to marry now we have moved past this (mostly) hopefully we can move past this being a problem as well.

"oh my you've got your hands full!"
Sunday, February 3, 2013
Any time I take my kids somewhere I get this.
"Wow. Your hands are full!" or
"Are they all yours?" or
"Do you know how this happens?" or
"Are you done yet?" or
"Are you crazy?"
Yes, my hands are full. But so is my heart. I have 5 kids. 5. One whole handful. One amazing group of kids. I am thankful for every.single.one of them. Each of them is a blessing.
But you see-- my hands are full- but my heart is more full. My kids are so loving and so joyful (most of the time- everyone has their days). I cannot imagine life without all of them. They are my heart.
Yes. They are all mine--well kind of. And my husband's. And our families (family not being limited to relatives- family meaning everyone who we love and who loves us-- which is A LOT more than blood relatives), they are also G-d's children. He for some reason- that I may never understand fully blessed me with these 5 great kids- He entrusted them to me- I don't know why- but He did.
Yes. I know how it happens. I was a Biological Sciences major in college-- got this one down.
Meh. If it happens it happens. Truth be told- I was not expecting any of my kids. They were all amazing surprises and great blessings.
Sure, I'm crazy. We all are crazy in our own way. Crazy keeps things interesting.

An Eating Disorder Rant
Saturday, September 24, 2011
It drives me nuts when people simplify it so much: eating disorders are about (insert, control, body image, self esteem) whichever.
Its not that simple. It is not. It is like saying a cold is about a runny nose. Great that may be a part of it, a superficial part of it, but at most a part of it- a symptom of the issue.
As someone who has spend countless hours in therapy dealing with an eating disorder- it is not about that. It goes much deeper than that- in most cases.
My eating disorder was a way of protecting myself a way of guarding myself from being hurt, from being vulnerable, from needing anyone, from trusting anyone lest I get hurt. It was about me being perfect. It became about feeling fat and overweight- but it did not start that way (in several studies men were given limited amounts of calories and they began to start obsessing about their weight and food, which suggests the response to starvation of that sort is more biological and not necessarily related to the eating disorder itself).
It irritates me to to end when people go on and on about the horrors of advertisements on girls self image or how awful Barbies are. I played with Barbies, I never wanted to look like one, it is a doll. Ads, certainly do not help, but it is kind of ridiculous to blame eating disorders and poor self esteem on ads. Poor self esteem comes from much more than advertisement exposure.
